Experimental Studies on the Ocular Effects of Vasculat

Abstract
Changes in the choroidal blood flow, caliber of the choroidal vessel, pupil diameter and intraocular pressure were investigated in albino rabbits after administration of Vasculat, a new, sympathomimetic amine.
Vasculat, administered intravenously in 5 animals under the Nembutal anesthesia, produced `slight decrease¢¥ in choroidal blood flow during the first 30 minutes, which was followed by 10.7% increase in the- blood flow. This increase in flow persisted even I hour after the administration of 10 mg of Vasculat.
The choroidal vessel caliber can be clearly seen with corneal microscope after proptosis and dehydration of sclera. In 10 animals treated by intravenous injections of Vasculat(10mg), the choroidal vessels dilated-¢¥ - within the first 30 minutes and maintained the dilated state for the next 30 minutes. T 211 increase in caliber of the vessel ranged from 4-14 micron, its average value was 7.3 micron, 11.4% of (he ?original value.
The intravenous administration of 10mg Vascult and local instillation of 2% solution produced, slight miosis within the first couple minutes followed by cyclic constriction and dilatation of slight degree. The intraocular pressure, measured with Schiotz tonometer, showed from 15% to 18% reduction lasting about an hour after administration.
It is concluded, therefore, that Vasculat produced dilation of choroidal vessel, increases in the choroidal blood flow, slight miosis and reduction of intraocular pressure.
